Day 2 July 10th
The babies are doing well. During the 2nd day, all but one lost a little weight but when weighing
them today, all gained and are now either over the birth weight or at least the same weight as at birth. It's not unusual
for puppies to lose a little right after birth, as long as they 'rebound' - which these guys and gals have done.
In another day or so I'll head back into the whelping box with the camera. Updated pics
will be available at that time!
Day 3 July 11th
Sadly, we lost Malibu, the smallest baby of the litter. Even when her brothers and sisters lost weight
the first day, she sustained her birth weight. However, she didn't have the same 'feel' to her as the others and that
was a growing concern to us. We were hopeful since her weight hadn't decreased that she would rally and turn the corner. We
kept her nursing on Dawn as well as trying to bottle feed her and also provided a nutritional supplement. Depsite our
efforts, she didn't make it :( It's always difficult for us to lose one of our reds, regardless of the age.
Day 4 July 12th
All the babies are doing great. Their weights range from 1 lb 4 oz to 1 lb 8 oz.
When I went to check on them this morning, all were eating heartily - two were even wagging their little
tails as they were happily nursing on Dawn!
Although it is still VERY early to tell what the coloring will be on the pups when they grow out, I am seeing
wonderful coat color on these pups - a nice rich solid red.
Day 5 July 13th
The puppies weights today show Savanna being the biggest gainer. Since yesterday's weigh in, she's
added 1/4 lb to the scale.
All pups continue to gain at a steady rate (although I think Savanna had the slight advantage yesterday!!).
Each are finding their way around the whelping box quite well. Call it coincidence but the two yellow
collared babies (Cheyenne & Nomad) always seem to find each other and cuddle together (they can't see yet but I'm
convinced these two think they are inseparable)!
6 Days Old ~ July 14th
The biggest 'gainer' today is Montana - a whopping 5 oz weight gain from yesterday! The rest of the
puppies all gained 3 oz each today - a very good amount.
All these puppies are nice and big and more importantly, they 'feel' good in your hands. They are
very active and it's getting to be a challenge keeping them on the scale long enough to weigh each of them!
Today, I also did a collar change on the puppies - much to their moaning and whining :)
7 Days Old ~ July 15th
HAPPY ONE WEEK BIRTHDAY !!
The pups are one week old today. It won't be long now before they start opening their eyes and ears!
Blazer was the gainer today - adding 4 oz to his weight. All the other pups gained an additional 3 oz today.
It's nice to see consistent, steady weight gain in all of them.
To celebrate their one week birthday, I took their first official pictures tonight. You can see a couple
of the puppy pictures on this page.
